York County Family Needs Help!

Take a moment to send a card, TODAY

Gavin Jones, a third grader at Bethel Elementary, has a brain tumor.

His mother has requested that people send him get well cards with a penny enclosed. She puts the pennies in a jar so he can see how many people are praying for him.

He also has a sister named Kennedy that would love to get some cards of encouragement.

Gavin's address is 817 River Stone Court, York, SC 29745. Please remember Gavin and his family in your prayers and take a few minutes to send a penny ...

It's May...Celebrate Special Days All Month Long!

Somewhere, someone created these crazy 'national holidays' to make the months a little more interesting. After all, when you're a kid, May is the last full month of school, and it can drag on and on, can't it? Even kids who LOVE school are looking forward to a break!

Here are some inventive 'calendar dates' to help your May move along a little more quickly. Your kids may ask you 'Why is this Chicken Dance Day?' Because Chic Fil A said it was! You'll have to consult Google for the rest of the dates...but if I had to guess, a creative Mom who was trying to answer the age old question 'Mommm! What are we going to do today, I'm BORED!'

These dates are not listed on our calendar, but will remain in this space in our newsletter through-out May to inspire you and rescue your children from the depths of Boredom!

May 5th: Cinco de Mayo
May 6th: NO DIET DAY (LOVE this one!)
May 10th: Clean up your room day (LOVE this one, definitely invented by a Mom)
May 12th: Train Day
May 13th: Mothers Day
May 14th: Chicken Dance Day
May 15th: National Chocolate Chip Day
May 18th: Bike to Work Day (not sure how this works with kids...do they bike to school? I doubt it, but worth checking on...)
May 23: Turtle Day
May 28: Jazz Day

Pick out the ones you want to get creative with, post them to your family calendar, and wha-la, no boredom!

Summer Fitness: A Review on Healthy Weight Control

I admit it, I am on a search for the 'cure'. The cure to fatigue, and to end the cycle of feeling terrible because the food I eat is not good for me. I don't want to feel like I'm poisoning my body in the name of a 'social get together' where plates and plates of pure sugar disguised as cake and cookies appear. Old habits die hard I guess; and it is hard to make a veggie tray look good. BUT I've discovered a little secret ...

Teacher Appreciation Week: May 7th - May 11th

Teacher Appreciation week is upon us, and it's time to show your children's teachers how much you appreciate them. If your children are home schooled, then I sure hope you skip on over to the 'fun' section of the store and pick up something you love for your efforts!

EASY Craft for Cinco de Mayo

Older kids will enjoy too!

Yes, I'm publishing a craft article! Because this one seems super easy, and I don't even need to trek to a store for most of the stuff, unless I want to get creative! So here you go, a craft that is EASY for Mom to throw together..you are welcome! --Markelle

PS I'm going to use blue painter tape for the tape, very colorful, and it's already in my supply collection.

Kids will love this fun and easy Cinco de Mayo craft.  Use paper or styrofoam ...

Rock n' Roll, Coming Soon to Rock Hill

Did you see that 38 Special is coming to Rock Hill in June!? I'll admit, after starting a family and juggling more balls than a clown at a circus, live music has been moved to the back burner of my life. However, when a blast from the past band like 38 special is going to perform in my backyard, I'm not one to miss it!

Check out this recent post from the Rock Hill Herald for full details, other acts that are coming to Rock Hill, and how to buy tickets.

Subscriber Question: What Can We Do This Summer?

Activities in and around Rock Hill for Mom's with Toddlers and 'Almost Toddlers'

Our subscriber Amanda recently wrote me 'What sorts of things are there to do in Rock Hill this summer with a child who is around 1 year old?"

No problem Amanda, there is PLENTY you can do, and the good news, a lot of it is free or very cost effective.

Two places that offer play areas with the right size toys/equipment for your little one are Chic Fil A play areas (there are 2 in Rock Hill, one on Cherry Road and one on Dave Lyle), the kid ...

Prom Season is Here!

Aaah the PROM! Such a milestone event for high school students. My favorite part of this generations' prom?! You can go with a group of friends instead of being obligated to find the perfect date! I so wish it had been this way when I was a teen, it would have taken A LOT of pressure off of the selection process!

Of course with PROM comes primping, right? Luckily in Rock Hill, SC, there is no shortage of Salons. From Salon Naman, Twisted Lemon, or CovRing, there are plenty to ...

Summer Jobs for Teens and College Students

I can truly empathize with today's young adult who wants a summer job, but cannot find one due to today's economy. The competition is FIERCE, and snagging a true, non-commission based job these days is tough!

So what is a teen, or college student to do? The same concepts apply to this age group as any other job seeking person: It's not WHAT you know, it's WHO you know.

Are your parents friendly with any local businesses? It does not have to be your dream job ...

Help Others In Your Backyard

Donating always feels good, but there is something special about donating locally, knowing the help that you give will directly impact someone else in your community.

Tender Hearts Thrift Shops  are stores that provide financial support for Tender Hearts Community Outreach and for Tender Hearts House of Hope.

Last year, for our daughter's birthday, we asked for clothing donations in lieu of gifts, and we took them to Tender Hearts. My husband said they were overjoyed to recieve such high-quality donations, and were very gracious.

If you are cleaning ...

The Green Smoothies Diet - A Review

Detox, Improve Digestion, Lose Weight, Maximize Energy

Aaaah, nothing says "I NEED TO GET INTO SHAPE" more than Bathing Suit season.

Now that I'm approaching the '40' mark, it's not even a matter of how I look in the swimsuit, it's how I feel. And being able to stand the heat. Let's face it, a few extra pounds certainly make the heat more unbearable.

But what about 'Diet'? Is that really the answer? As long as you're talking about your 'Nutrition Intake Diet' and not your 'Quick Fix Weight Loss' diet, then ...

York County Forum

just for Mom's of York County

If you haven't heard of the forum YorkCountyMommies.com, you are missing out on one of York County's best kept secrets!

I moved to York County in early 2008, and I really didn't know a soul. Our only 'friends' were in Ballantyne, and they are grandparents, so they didn't have time to babysit us while we got familiar with the area.

I'm not sure how I found York County Mommies (proabably through a search), but I immediately fell in love. Moms, Moms, MOMS! Talking about ...

Education: A Family Affair

Fast, Simple Ideas to Bring Learning Into Your Home

I recently had a conversation with the Mother of a Middle Schooler, and she could not believe the amount of work her daughter is bringing home. As I talk with more and more parents, it seems that education does not end at 3pm every day for most students, they are bogged down with projects, reports, and more, that require concentration and effort outside of the classroom. This can be a good thing; but it also seems there is a communication breakdown - many parents I speak to are caught off guard ...

Online Shopping Discounts...ALL THE TIME

Aaaaah the convenience of online shopping. Seriously, I've eliminated shoe stores and bathing suit shopping from my time, I simply click here, buy there, and occasionally have to return some things due to size/fit, but it's worth it. LOVE IT! We all love our family, but nothing puts a crimp in your shopping budget/time more than small children, summer camps and vacations for the kiddos in the summer, and let's not even 'go there' on the gas prices this summer!

If you like coupons, then ...
